PEAR CINNAMON

Lukas Verstraete is a Belgian illustrator and graphic novelist known for his raw, absurd, and tender visual style

His work features a cast of flawed characters — from doubtful knights to grotesque figures — navigating life’s big questions with sweat, smut, and sincerity. His illustrations have appeared in international publications like The New York Times, Le Monde Diplomatique, and HUMO. In 2013, he won the Best Script Award at the Fumetto comics festival, and in 2017, he published his debut graphic novel Een Boek Waarmee Men Vrienden Maakt, later translated in France and the U.S. Since 2018, Lukas teaches at LUCA School of Arts in both Ghent and Brussels, inspiring a new generation of visual storytellers.

The story behind 'Everything Turns'

Lukas’ illustration turns in a continuous loop, mirroring how day slides into night and night gently becomes a new day. No matter which way you view the artwork, the cycle remains visible. Just like the rotation of our planet, which knows no beginning and no end. With each revolution, the rooster greets the morning, the sun climbs higher, flowers unfurl, shadows shift, the moon arrives, and the owl lifts into the quiet darkness. This unbroken rhythm carries a quiet reassurance: everything returns. Every cycle offers another chance to start again, to breathe, to move forward… and to trust the turning of things.
