The story behind 'Shrooms'
“The design is all about cycles,” Vandekerckhove said. “When I started working on the design for Apple Mint, I wanted to capture the idea that life and death are constantly intertwined. That everything moves in circles. If you look closely, there’s a hidden skull in the illustration. It’s subtle, almost invisible at first, but it’s there to represent death. And then you notice the ladybird and the daffodils, small signs of rebirth and renewal. The wheat stalks symbolise abundance and growth, life in full swing, while the five mushrooms stand for happiness, wisdom, and enlightenment. I like playing with these layers of meaning, where each element tells part of the story. Even the dew drops have a purpose. The ancient Greeks saw dew as a symbol of fertility, falling from the sky to give life. For me, it’s about reminding people that everything is connected, that every ending quietly holds a beginning.”
